FIVE BRANDS / THREE QUESTIONS / ONE ANSWER ENGINE
Who Gets to Explain Your Brand to AI?
01 / THE QUESTION
When AI talks about a brand, who gets to supply the evidence?
Brand websites are no longer the only place where a brand is explained. AI answer engines assemble descriptions from a wider public evidence system: publishers, regulators, comparison sites, reviews, forums, social platforms and sometimes the brand itself.
I wanted a way to see that dependency. So I tested five recognisable UK brands in Google AI Overviews and measured how many visible citations came from sources the brand actually controlled.
02 / THE FIELD TEST
Small enough to run. Strict enough to mean something.
Tesco, Monzo, Octopus Energy, O2 and easyJet.
Offer and fit, customer experience, and problems or scrutiny.
One Google AI Overview for every brand–prompt combination.
Unique within each response after removing tracking noise.
AI Citation Ownership Gap = the proportion of unique visible citations in an AI response that point to sources outside the brand's control. Each response was weighted equally so answers with more source cards did not dominate the result.
03 / THE READING
The question changed the ownership gap.
Owned websites appeared most often when the question was close to product definition: what the brand sells, how it works and who it is for.
The further the question moved towards lived experience, criticism and regulation, the more the answer depended on evidence controlled by somebody else.
Brands often help define the offer. Other people help define the experience and the scrutiny.
04 / THE FIVE BRANDS
A directional snapshot, not a league table.
The sample is deliberately small and the result is sensitive to prompt wording, timing, interface and source-card behaviour. These numbers describe this dated test—not the permanent reputation of any brand.
05 / IMPORTANT SMALL PRINT
What this does—and does not—measure.
It measures visible citations
Not training data, hidden retrieval, model influence or the objective truth of an answer.
Third party is not bad
Independent reporting, reviews and regulators are often exactly what a trustworthy answer should use.
Owned is not true
A brand-controlled page can still be promotional, incomplete, unclear or out of date.
This is Google-only
ChatGPT required a signed-in collection surface. Perplexity blocked the automated browser. I did not replace either with ordinary search results.
06 / WHAT BIC BRINGS BACK
A brand does not own the story told about it.
The practical response is not to manufacture pages solely to chase AI citations. It is to understand which parts of the brand's public reality are explained by owned evidence, strong independent evidence, weak evidence—or no clear evidence at all.
The useful diagnostic question is: where does the brand need to clarify a fact, where should independent evidence lead, and where is the answer ecosystem simply fragile?
Search once asked whether you ranked. AI search also asks who gets to explain you.
