INTERNET FIELD TRIP 003 / HABIT WITHOUT CONTENT

Infinite scroll without the internet

Someone removed everything from the feed except the scrolling.People still travelled kilometres.

WHAT I VISITED

FUTILE is an infinite feed with the internet taken out.

No posts. No recommendations. No adverts. No creator explaining the morning routine that changed everything. Just a dark page, a distance counter and an instruction to keep scrolling.

The feed disappeared. The gesture survived.

WHAT HAPPENED

The void had metrics.

0

Posts supplied

The experience removes the thing a feed is supposedly for.

2,201+

Kilometres recorded

The live global counter when I visited on 15 August 2026.

22 km

Top public score

The all-time leaderboard showed one person had scrolled 22.00067 kilometres.

Bottom available

The page extends as you move. FUTILE says the bottom is officially unreachable.

WHAT I NOTICED

The interface did not need anything to say.

FUTILE turns scrolling into both the activity and the score. The page stretches, the counter moves and occasional messages float up from the darkness. One compares it to Instagram without purple chia-seed smoothies.

The site describes itself as an artistic critique of endless scrolling. It says it counts distance instead of likes and measures how far someone is willing to go. It even has leaderboards, certificates and a warning for suspiciously enthusiastic mouse wheels.

Those details turn an empty gesture into a tiny game. There is still no destination, but there is progress, status and the possibility that the next flick might reveal a better joke.

WHY IT MATTERS

Maybe content is only half the feed.

01THE LOOP

Movement promises something next

Each gesture creates its own reason for another: the page changed, so perhaps the next movement will matter more.

02THE HABIT

The hand knows the product

Remove the feed items and the swipe still feels recognisable. Part of the product has been trained into the interaction itself.

03THE REVEAL

Engagement can outlive value

A metric can keep rising after the useful thing has vanished. Distance travelled is honest about the absurdity; time-on-platform usually is not.

WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT THE CURRENT INTERNET

The feed is content wrapped around a reflex.

Feeds are usually justified by what they contain: friends, news, entertainment, expertise, discovery. FUTILE is funny because it removes all of that and leaves something that still behaves like a feed.

The point is not simply that social media is addictive. It is that an interface can continue producing engagement after its supposed value has been stripped away. The gesture, variable reward and lack of a stopping point are not packaging around the product. They are part of the product.

ONE USEFUL IDEA BROUGHT BACK

Test the empty version.

When assessing a feed, streak, notification or engagement loop, mentally remove the content and reward. If the interaction still pulls people forward, you have found the behavioural machinery. Then ask whether it is helping someone choose—or merely making stopping less likely.
