Simple transactions acquire identities
RingGo requires an account for the tested web parking flow. Tesco requires a Tesco account linked to Clubcard for online groceries. Neither app is compulsory, but the account relationship is.
ACCOUNT & APP DEPENDENCY / 10 SERVICES / UPDATED 12 AUGUST 2026
Some accounts protect private information or save something genuinely useful. Others turn parking, groceries or a radiator into a long-term relationship. The distinction matters.
THE SHORT ANSWER
An account is reasonable when the service must remember a subscription, protect financial information or provide a continuing personalised service. It becomes harder to justify when it gates a simple transaction that could work as a guest.
An app should add convenience, not become the only key to something already purchased. Across these ten tests, the healthiest services kept a useful website, guest route, physical control or human alternative alive.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
RingGo requires an account for the tested web parking flow. Tesco requires a Tesco account linked to Clubcard for online groceries. Neither app is compulsory, but the account relationship is.
Netflix and Barclays have legitimate reasons to authenticate people. That does not make the resulting data, retention and platform relationship irrelevant; it means the assessment must be proportionate.
Hodmedod’s reaches payment without an account. British Airways allows research and booking without loyalty membership. GOV.UK and Marginalia complete their tested tasks without registration at all.
Nine of the ten services retain a meaningful browser route for the task examined. Hive is the clearest dependency case: basic physical control survives, while much of the smart value relies on its app, account and infrastructure.
THE TEN-SERVICE COMPARISON
The scores shown are the Good Internet Score’s No-App and No-Account categories, each out of ten. A high account score can mean either no account is needed or that authentication is genuinely justified by the task.

The Platform Dependency Calculator measures traffic concentration, revenue exposure, owned audience, portability and what happens if a platform disappears. The new Google Preferred Sources button is a smaller example of the same question: who remembers the audience relationship?

This page is generated from the same structured evidence used by the ten Good Internet Score profiles. Evidence tags connect recurring observations; they do not create extra scores.
The research combines direct observation with official documentation. Authenticated, paid or hardware-dependent steps that were not safely tested remain marked as unverified on the individual profiles. This is independent editorial research, not certification.
